“MAIZE SILAGE is cheaper than 1st Cut grass Silage and considerably cheaper than any 2nd Cut Silage – But only if you get it right” 🌽✅
Otherwise, it can become a very expensive silage ❌💸.
With over 30 years of experience with forage maize in Ireland, we at Southern Fuel & Farm Supplies Ltd know what we’re talking about when it comes to maize. It’s quite a simple crop to grow – when things go right. But ask anyone who has grown maize for years – things can and often do go wrong ⚠️
Soil nutrition is the starting point of a successful maize crop. When you consider a possible 50-tonne fresh yield or up to 16–17 tonnes DM/ha, remember:
If you don’t feed it, you won’t have it at harvest time 🚜
Choosing the right maize seed variety for your site is critical. Matching the maize seed variety to the site, where you want optimum performance, requires long-time hands-on experience.
There are over 50 varieties available to Irish farmers this year – but only 5 or 6 are truly proven in Irish conditions.
Get it wrong, and performance drops.
Get it right, and the rewards are big.
A major issue now with the number of Maize crop chemicals that have been de-listed for use in the EU. Resistant weeds are becoming more of a problem. Again, weed control can be managed, but only if you know exactly what you’re doing.
When to use / when you may not need to use.
A crop without plastic can be much more difficult to keep weeds / pest out of. It may become a very expensive crop in a bad weather year, if not sown in the right site.
High-yielding maize crops need balanced micronutrients. Deficiencies can quickly cripple your crop’s yield and performance.
Trace element deficiencies come to the fore in high yielding crops like Maize, and if not attended to, can riddle yield & performance.
Eyespot can have a devastating impact on Maize crops and again can massacre yields. if not identified and treated on time.
Some farmers put huge effort into buying Maize Seed at the cheapest price possible – Fair enough!
The seed price in itself is most likely less than 10% of the total cost of growing a good crop of Maize.
