Despite the recent challenging weather conditions over half of our Winter barley has now been harvested. Initial reports show very good yields with excellent grain quality. Spring barley is probably two weeks away and most crops show promising outcomes.
Our native cereals off the combine continue to offer livestock farmers the very best value per unit of energy compared to anything that will be available in the form of commercially blended feeds this Winter. Irish cereals will always be higher in energy than compound or coarse blends. that are often formulated on a least cost basis.
Like the last few years, Irish grown cereals are again at a modest price and offer excellent value for inclusion in dairy or beef finishing diets this winter. Sourcing barley, wheat or oats off the combine and storing on farm with the use of a quality treatment like Maxammon will result in a high energy ,protein enhanced quality feed that should be available for feeding out at approximately €190 per tonne. This can greatly reduce farm concentrate costs by anything from €50 to €80 per tonne and more importantly significantly improve animal performance.
While there are many benefits to home saved grain, the saving process can often be compromised by unpredictable weather resulting in variable grain moisture and immature grain resulting in less than perfect pit stability.
Fortunately, at Southern Fuel & Farm Supplies we can provide our customers the security of a reliable outcome that ensures optimum home saved grain with Maxammon.
Harbro and Southern Fuel & Farm Supplies have been working with and developing the Maxammon technology for more than 10 years. In those years we have seen the challenges of many harvests and have identified the pitfalls in saving harvest grain such as unnecessary spoilage and pest damage. We continue to provide on farm support at harvest time and beyond to guide our customers towards the best outcome.
The reliability of Maxammon has been further enhanced by Harbro’s partnership with 14 universities and research institutes in 8 countries across the world to rigorously test and develop the product to ensure that ruminants from a diverse range of systems can use it to obtain the best nutritional response. Maxammon is now used in 20 countries worldwide.
Maxammon is the industry leader in Alkaline grain preservation and continues to provide the reliability of a safe and secure method of incorporating high cereal inclusions in dairy diets plus an efficient means of Ad-lib cereal feeding to cattle.
Remember Maxammon treatment raises the cereal pH to an alkaline level of 8.5 – 9 and also increases the grain protein content by an additional 4.5 percentage points.
Maxammon treatment of grain means that where appropriate you can feed all native cereals to your stock and totally eliminate inferior bye products and lower energy imported materials. The resulting high pH from Maxammon treatment prevents the animals from getting acidosis normally associated with high starch feeding.
Wishing you all the best for the harvest and beyond.
